Open edX releases, end-of-life dates and security advisories

Short answer (updated October 21, 2026)

Cubite, which runs managed Open edX from $1,260 a month, tracks every Open edX named release and security advisory; as of October 21, 2026, Verawood is the only release with community support.

Named-release upgrades, rehearsed on a UAT environment before production, are included in every Cubite managed Open edX tier. The next named release, Willow, is targeted for late February 2027, according to the Open edX release team.

Every Open edX named release and its support status

Newest first. "Code cut" is the day the release branch was cut. "Released" is the date of the release's first tag (its .1 tag from Eucalyptus on); "Unsupported since" is the next release's date, since only the latest release is supported. Dates and tags come from the Open edX named-release branches and tags page, except lilac.3 and maple.3, which it does not list (their dates are the tagged commits'); the Tutor column comes from Tutor's changelog.

  • Verawood: Current supported release since 2026-07-30. The August, September and October 2026 security fixes (GHSA-g266-6v7f-j465, GHSA-c6xg-fh3c-vvhh and the openedx-forum 0.4.2.post1 fix for GHSA-c6fp-f54c-6cv4) are on the release/verawood branch after verawood.1, not yet in a tag (as of 2026-10-21); apply patches as they ship.
  • Ulmo: Unsupported since Verawood shipped on 2026-07-30. The August, September and October 2026 security fixes reached the release/ulmo branch after ulmo.4, without a new tag.
  • Ironwood: Last release with Python 2 support. Tutor 3.0.0, the rewrite of Tutor as a single binary, came out for Ironwood in February 2019.

Security advisories and the releases they affect

27 advisories, newest first, from the GitHub security advisories of the openedx repositories. "Affects" lists every release with at least one tag that ships the vulnerable code. "Fixed in" names the oldest release with a tag that carries the fix, or, while no tag carries it, the supported release whose branch does; the description says so. The advisories are the Open edX project's; where GitHub credits a reporter, the credit is on the advisory's page.

Open edX release questions

Which Open edX release is supported right now?

As of October 21, 2026, Verawood is the only release with community support. Every earlier named release is unsupported, so it gets no community security fixes in a tagged release.

When is the next Open edX release?

The next named release, Willow, is targeted for late February 2027. The Open edX Build-Test-Release working group moved the Willow cut to early January 2027 because the Verawood cycle ran late and several features are still in development, and confirmed the plan on the Open edX forum on October 5, 2026.

Is Ulmo still supported?

No. Ulmo lost community support when Verawood shipped on July 30, 2026. The August, September and October 2026 security fixes still reached the release/ulmo branch after ulmo.4, without a new tag, but do not plan around that continuing.

Which security advisories affect my Open edX release?

Find your release in the advisories table on this page, or run Cubite's free release checker, which reads the same data and lists the advisories and the upgrade path for your release.

Does Cubite's managed Open edX include upgrades?

Yes. Named-release upgrades, rehearsed on a UAT environment before production, are included in every Cubite managed Open edX tier, from $1,260 a month. Bringing an inherited instance up from an unsupported release is a fixed quote agreed before the managed term starts.

Where does this data come from?

Release dates and support status come from the Open edX named-release branches and tags page on docs.openedx.org, Tutor versions from Tutor's changelog, advisories from the GitHub security advisories of the openedx repositories, and release plans and cut dates from the Open edX forum. Cubite reviews the data weekly.

Behind on releases?

Check your release in the free checker, or book a 30-minute call about getting to Verawood. Cubite runs managed Open edX from $1,260 a month with named-release upgrades included; bringing an inherited instance up from an unsupported release is a fixed quote agreed before the managed term starts.
